Leftto right:  Hannah Olive, teacher with Ellie Brackenbury and Emily Sanehawith judge and 2016 Masterchef winner Jane Devonshire

Jane Devonshire, judge and 2016 Masterchef winner, was full of praise for the14 year old winners' culinary skill and attention to detail inthe regional final of the 2017 Create & Cook Competition.

"Ellie andEmily cooked some really delicious food. Their mille feuille could have beenserved in any top restaurant, the pastry was exceptional.  Their homemadepasta was silky with succulent chicken and tasty mushrooms.  But whatreally set them apart from the other great young cooks was their  attentionto detail - Gallybagger cheese crisps with their pasta dish, chocolate andpopping candy spoons with their dessert, inspired.  They are very talentedcooks with a great future." Jane Devonshire

Ellie and Emily from Sandown Bay Academy on the Isle of Wight went all out touse as many local ingredients as possible and this gave their menu real flavourand character. They were really delighted to have won as they had worked sohard perfecting their dishes. All the judges were bowled over with the tasteand presentation of Emily and Ellie's dishes.

Runners up who cooked with confidence were Maisy and Mille from The AngmeringSchool, Leila and Jasmine from Bishop Luffa School in Sussex and Liam andCharlie from Bitterne Park School in Southampton. They all did reallywell cooking under pressure and produced some very good tastingdishes.  The young cooks learnt a huge amount from the experience andgained confidence in taking part in a competition which stretched them anddeveloped their teamwork.

Jane Devonshire who comes from Hampshire was delighted to see young cooksengaging with local ingredients and learning about the provenance of theirfood.

"You become abetter cook if you really understand your ingredients and it's better for theenvironment and local economy to buy locally. I was really impressed with theseyoung cooks. It took me til my 50's to be brave enough to enter a cookerycompetition, Masterchef, and they are only 14. It just shows you have to giveit a go and challenge yourself"
Jane Devonshire
