Although Newlyns is predeomantely a livestock farm, the summer harvest is still a crucial time of year. Over August it is important for the farm to gather in both the feed and the bedding for the winter months.

The animals on the farm require about 6000 bales of straw to keep them warm and comfortable for the winter. This straw is baled and carted by Newlyns farm staff from other local arable farms who don't need their straw. This year the straw is even more important due to the lack of silage made in the very dry May and June.

Newlyns have already cut their barley which will be used to feed the cattle. As the fields are cleared of barley and straw they are immediately planted with turnips which will feed the sheep over the winter.
