The Farm |
|
The family operate a 500 acre traditional mixed farm producing
beef cattle, outdoor pigs, sheep, free-range chickens, barn-reared
turkeys at Christmas, as well as growing cereal crops. This type
of mixed farm with its diverse range of enterprises, many of which
compliment each other, is a dying breed as many farms become specialised
or are forced to streamline their operations by rising costs and
lack of available labour.
Currently the farm employs nine full time staff and three part
time staff, all of whom live locally.
Food Miles
The farm has a good relationship with the local abattoir, just fifteen
miles away. The short journey time means less stress for the animals,
leading to improved eating quality and of course, fewer food miles
for the final product. This also enables meat to be returned to
the shop the following day where there are facilities for cold storing
the meat and hanging the beef.
Traditional Farming
The meat is farmed conventionally. Newlyns believe that this is
better for the consumer and the animals. Farm staff are able to
administer modern treatments quickly and efficiently to ensure all
the animals remain healthy and in tip top condition resulting in
the customers enjoying a consistent product that has been produced
under the highest welfare standards by trained staff.
Quality Meat and Award Winning Specialities
The greater majority of the meat sold and used in the shop is produced
on the family’s farm, although at peak times a very small
proportion of meat may have to be sourced elsewhere, in which case
they specifically look for British product of the highest quality.
The shop staff also produce all the pies, pasties and sausage rolls
on the shop premises each day to their own recipes using known ingredients
and thus ensuring fresh product. Sausages, award-winning bacon,
hams and barbecue specialities are made by the three resident butchers.
In addition to meat, the shop stocks locally-produced seasonal vegetables,
sauces and conserves as well as an excellent range of dairy products.
